Street Outreach Ministers provide a “search and rescue” service to the unhoused in Houston and Greater Houston area. This is the first touch from Star of Hope for many of those we encounter. Driving our Love in Action vans filled with basic need items including Hope Bags (LINK to Hope Bags), snack bags, cold water, blankets, and other in-kind donations, the Street Outreach Ministers visit those living unhoused in Houston, Harris County, and the surrounding areas as well (Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Brazoria counties).
Building a rapport with trust with those they encounter, the Street Outreach Ministers share water, food for the body, and present the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the soul. They visit, share, engage, and begin to set goals for next steps. Housing assessments are completed to link clients to housing opportunities through the Coordinated Access System of The Way Home (Coalition for the Homeless Houston) and make referrals to shelter (Star of Hope’s Women & Family and Men’s Development Centers) when appropriate.
Many calls and web requests are received from families and individuals who are precariously housed. They may have just got an apartment, but have no furniture to make it a “home”; they may have fallen behind in rental payments; some need assistance with utility bills; and, others may have received a vacate notice or eviction notice.
These families can be at risk of becoming homeless and, with intervention, they may remain housed.
Our Outreach team connects with these households to discuss the circumstances surrounding the need/request and then a plan is developed. Referrals, resources, and encouragement are provided to help households prevent becoming homeless.
