As we celebrate the holiday season—a time of giving, gratitude, and renewal—we are reminded of your generosity’s profound impact on those in need. Many who come to the Star of Hope seek to find redemption and a new beginning that we are blessed with because of Christ’s love for us. For Lisa, a recent New Hope program graduate, the love of her family and her answered prayers brought her to the doors of Star of Hope to get the help she needed. This is her story:
On May 2, 2024, I was going through a lot and couldn’t take it anymore. I had been praying to God to help me escape my situation. I had been living in an efficiency motel since June of 2023 because my apartment burned down, and I had lost everything I owned. Now, I was in an environment where drugs were everywhere, and my life began to spin out of control.
That was when I got a text message from my daughter that said, “Hey mom, what are you doing today? How’s everything going?” I sat staring at the phone in my hand because I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to respond, being that I was high at the time. I got myself together and texted her back. I cried out and said, “Baby girl, I need help! I’m done! I can’t live this way any longer.”
I came to Star of Hope through God’s grace, and being here has shown me how to reshape my life. I have learned so many things from the New Hope staff and how to apply them to my life. Most of all, I want to thank God for answering my prayers while I was crying out for help!
Thank you for your continued prayers and support in making these life-changing moments possible. Because of you, Lisa has created a new path for herself and learned to lean on God in times of grief and pain.

Wow! God is soooo AWESOME!! I wish years ago I could have taken a homeless friend, who sold newspapers on the corner, to SoH. This testimony about apartment burning & living in motel sounds identical to Mary’s story. She lived in a tent 11 months of the year & saved money to be able to rent a motel room near the Dome during the coldest month in Houston. She had a son she barely stayed in touch with. He didn’t want much to do with her unless she would give it all up to get straightened out. Mary had two jobs; selling the paper in the morning & flowers in the afternoon at two different parts of town. She was a lovely soul. I treasure our conversations waiting for the light to change & the rare times she allowed me to drive her across town to get a bucket of flowers. She loved my little boys! I say this all in the past, because I was the one who moved & I don’t know where her life led from then.
