Many who come to Star of Hope seek a fresh start after years of struggling to find the right path. Teira grew up believing she was unworthy of being the person God created her to be. Without the care and guidance she needed, she lost sight of what she truly deserved. This is her story:

I didn’t have the greatest childhood growing up. Being raised in a military family, I moved around often, so I never had a proper home. I was abused at home and bullied at school. I could never understand why others (including my family) treated me like they did. At the age of 7, I was sent to live with my mom, but my life didn’t improve; the abuse and bullying never stopped.

It led me to believe that the company I kept was the company I deserved, and I ended up in a toxic relationship. Eventually, I decided I needed a change, so I made the bold choice to move to Houston. I knew nothing about the city but soon arrived on a Greyhound bus, using the last bit of cash I had for a hotel. I knew I had to leave when I felt cockroaches crawling on my face during the night. That next day, I learned of Star of Hope!

With no money left to my name, I walked all the way to the Women and Family Development Center. It took me five long hours to walk here, running on two days of no sleep, but I was too excited to rest. I entered the Personal Development program, where I learned that although I was quick to call myself lazy and a procrastinator, I was neither. The classes have taught me to challenge myself, and I refuse to settle for less than I deserve. Thank you for this new chance at life!

Thank you for your generous support, which has given Teira the chance she needed to find herself again. With your help, she has been granted a second chance at life and a new perspective on herself!
